Act Now: Protect EB Families by Defending Section 504

Right now, a lawsuit called Texas v. Becerra is putting vital disability protections at risk. Seventeen states are suing the U.S. government to get rid of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, a federal law that has safeguarded disability rights for over 50 years. If successful, this lawsuit could strip away essential protections from millions of Americans with disabilities, including those living with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).

What is Section 504?

Section 504 is a cornerstone of disability rights in the U.S. It ensures that any place that receives federal funding — like schools, hospitals, and doctors' offices — cannot exclude or deny services to people with disabilities.

This law is especially important in education and healthcare, where it helps people with disabilities access accommodation, equal opportunities, and necessary medical care.

Why Does Section 504 Matter to the EB Community?

Many of our families impacted by EB rely on Section 504. It provides vital protections such as:

  • In schools, it ensures that kids with EB receive accommodations like modified physical activities, extra time for assignments, and access to a nurse.
  • In healthcare, it prevents discrimination by hospitals, doctors, and insurance providers, helping individuals with EB receive the care they need.
  • In public spaces, it helps ensure access to programs, transportation, and other services that improve quality of life.

Without Section 504, many of these protections could disappear, making it even harder for people with EB and other disabilities to access the support and services they rely on.
